Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd.
SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY LLC
Cosmo Energy Group company, Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd. (hereafter, Cosmo Oil Marketing), is pleased to announce that it will begin supplying Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) produced domestically by SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY LLC (hereafter, “SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY”) to Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. and ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS CO., LTD. starting in FY2025. The commencement of SAF supply to Japan-based airlines from FY2025 onwards will mark the establishment of Japan’s first supply chain for this locally made fuel.
The SAF to be supplied was adopted in 2021 and commercialized as part of a New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)-subsidized project1 aimed at establishing a supply chain model for SAF production from locally sourced used cooking oil. It will be the first locally made SAF to be mass produced in Japan. In addition, the fuel has obtained international certifications that recognize compliance with international standards for sustainable products2.
In the aviation industry, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has set the goal to achieve net zero CO2 emissions from international flights by 2050. Additionally, it has committed to reducing CO2 emissions in the international aviation sector by 15% compared to 2019 levels from 2024 onwards.
Promoting the widespread use of SAF will play a vital role in accelerating the decarbonization of the aviation industry. As the first step towards promoting its adoption, the Cosmo Energy Group will facilitate the supply of SAF, mass produced by SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY for the first time in Japan, to domestic airlines.
The Cosmo Energy Group, together with JGC HOLDINGS CORPORATION and REVO International Inc., has jointly explored commercialization of a SAF supply chain that encompasses the domestic collection of used cooking oil through the production, transportation, and supply of SAF. In 2022, the three companies newly established SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY, with the goal of supplying approximately 30,000 kiloliters of SAF per year, derived solely from used cooking oil generated in Japan. Construction of the SAF production facility (plant) was completed on December 25, 20243.
From FY2025 onwards, the Group will realize the establishment of an end-to-end domestic SAF supply chain, covering everything from the procurement of used cooking oil as feedstock to the production and quality control of SAF, and its supply to airlines. This is the first initiative of its kind in Japan.

Recognizing decarbonization and the realization of a recycling-oriented society as key priorities, the Cosmo Energy Group and SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY remain committed to jointly undertaking initiatives that contribute to the decarbonization of the aviation industry.

“Since 2021, with the support of the Japanese government, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, and NEDO, we have been working with JGC HOLDINGS CORPORATION, Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd., and REVO International Inc. to commercialize SAF. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone involved for helping to build a major wave of domestic resource recycling through activities such as ‘ACT for SKY’ and ‘Fry to Fly.’”
