Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd. (hereafter, “Cosmo Oil”), Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd. (hereafter, “Cosmo Oil Marketing”), and SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY LLC (hereafter, “SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY”) are pleased to announce that they have obtained ISCC CORSIA1 and ISCC EU2 certifications (hereafter, “these Certifications”). These Certifications, part of the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) initiative, recognize compliance with international standards for sustainable products.

This achievement marks the first time in Japan3 that a SAF production base has obtained these Certifications. It ensures ISCC certified operations by the series of companies across the entire supply chain—from the procurement of used cooking oil by REVO International Inc. (hereafter, "REVO International") to the production, storage, and supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and bionaphtha, and the delivery of SAF to airlines and other consumers. This milestone enables the companies to supply internationally-certified, locally-made SAF and bionaphtha in Japan.

Obtaining these Certifications has enabled us to handle ISCC CORSIA and ISCC EU certified products for which sustainable raw materials are allocated through the mass balance approach4.

【About the Project for Large-scale Production of Japan’s First Locally-made SAF】

Cosmo Oil, JGC HOLDINGS CORPORATION, and REVO International have jointly explored commercialization of a SAF supply chain that encompasses the domestic collection of used cooking oil through the production, transportation, and supply of SAF. In 2022, the companies newly established SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY, with the goal of supplying approximately 30,000 kiloliters of SAF per year, derived from used cooking oil generated in Japan. Currently, construction of a SAF production line is underway at Cosmo Oil’s Sakai Refinery (Sakai City, Osaka), with supply set to begin in early 2025. This project is subsidized by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)6.

1. ISCC CORSIA is recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for the certification of CORSIA-eligible sustainable aviation fuels.

2. ISCC EU is recognized by the European Commission to demonstrate compliance with the sustainability criteria for biofuels set out in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) for all member states of the European Union.

3. According to research conducted by Cosmo Oil on the ISCC official website: https://www.iscc-system.org/

4. Mass-balance approach is a method for assessing the sustainability of products made using multiple types of raw materials, including biomass and recycled raw materials as well as fossil-based raw materials. In this method, characteristics of sustainable raw materials (e.g., biomass and recycled raw materials) included in finished products are taken into account in a manner that reflects the proportional volume of such raw materials.

5. Cosmo Oil’s Head Office obtained ISCC PLUS certification in July 2023.
