Cosmo to Begin Newly Supplying 100% Renewable Energy-derived Electricity to All Sakai City Schools and Water Supply and Sewerage Facilities, Marking the Largest Introduction of Renewable Energy at Municipal Public Facilities in Osaka Prefecture

Cosmo Energy Group company, Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd. (hereafter, “Cosmo Oil Marketing”), announced today that it will begin supplying 100% renewable energy-derived electricity to all 138 municipal schools and day care centers as well as two water supply and sewerage facilities in Sakai City starting October 1, 20241. This marks the largest annual consumption of renewable energy-derived electricity by municipal public facilities in Osaka Prefecture.
In an effort to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, Sakai City revised the Sakai City Global Warming Prevention Action Plan in November 2022. Under this plan, the city aims to switch electricity consumed at public facilities to 100% renewable energy-derived electricity. As an initiative to contribute to the realization of this plan, the city introduced Cosmo Denki (Electricity) Business Green2, a renewable energy-derived electricity plan provided by Cosmo Oil Marketing, at eight municipal day care centers on April 1, 2024. Under this next phase, the plan will be newly introduced at all 138 municipal schools and day care centers as well as two water supply and sewerage facilities in Sakai City.

Cosmo Denki (Electricity) Business Green is an electricity plan that provides renewable energy-derived electricity, endorsed by a non-fossil certificate with tracking information linked to a renewable energy source that falls under Japan’s Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) scheme, such as wind power generated by Cosmo Eco Power Co., Ltd., a Cosmo Energy Group company.
With this expanded introduction of the plan, annual electricity consumption of approximately 38.80 million kWh3 by 148 facilities in Sakai City, including municipal day care centers at which the plan has already been introduced, will be switched to renewable energy-derived electricity, resulting in a projected annual CO2 emission reduction of approximately 16,700 tons. This equates to approximately 30% of the greenhouse gas emissions (FY2022) from electricity and gas consumed by municipal facilities (excluding waste treatment facilities).
Going forward, Cosmo Oil Marketing remains committed to supporting local governments and companies in reducing their environmental impact and will continue to undertake various initiatives toward the realization of a decarbonized society.

Cosmo Energy Solutions Co., Ltd. is a 100% subsidiary of Cosmo Oil Marketing and a retail electricity operator that supplies electric power. Cosmo Oil Marketing has entered into a distributor agreement with Cosmo Energy Solutions regarding sales of electric power. The supply period is defined as October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025.

Cosmo Denki (Electricity) Business Green is a service that helps businesses achieve virtually zero CO2 emissions by providing them with added environmental value in the form of non-fossil certificates and other designated renewable energy certificates. Customers purchase such certificates with a value equivalent to or greater than their total annual sales volume as part of the electricity sales process, thereby receiving proof that all the electricity they use offers environmental value derived almost entirely from renewable energy sources. Since its launch in 2020, the service has been utilized mainly by corporations and local governments seeking to decarbonize their operations. Furthermore, Cosmo Zero Carbon Solution offers a one-stop solution that encompasses sales of renewable energy and complementary products like EVs.
