Abu Dhabi Oil Co., Ltd. (President: Katsushi Nishi), a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Exploration & Production Co., Ltd. (President: Katsushi Nishi), is pleased to announce that its long-standing environmental conservation activities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates have been featured in "Engineering With Nature: An Atlas, Volume 3," a magazine published by Engineering With Nature (EWN)1.
EWN is an initiative led by research institutions and companies worldwide, with the aim of promoting sustainable infrastructure development. The initiative leverages natural processes to provide innovative and effective solutions for flood prevention, water quality improvement, and other issues through the building of infrastructure, in an effort to contribute to the realization of a more resilient and sustainable society.
The featured initiative is Abu Dhabi Oil’s mangrove planting activities on Mubarraz Island, located off the coast of Abu Dhabi in the Arabian Gulf. These efforts have been ongoing for over 35 years, with more than 500,000 young mangroves transplanted from a seedling nursery. Since 2009, Abu Dhabi Oil has adopted approaches that utilize nature to provide more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions, moving beyond the conventional approach of relying exclusively on man-made structures and technologies, based on methods advocated by EWN. Specifically, Abu Dhabi Oil is undertaking innovative activities to prevent wave erosion by digging artificial tidal channels along levees and transplanting mangroves to allow the levees to function as coastal breakwaters. To date, this initiative has successfully established mangrove vegetation along approximately seven kilometers of coastline, covering about 20% of levees, with plans to extend new plantings to a total of nine kilometers in the future.
In recognition of these achievements, Abu Dhabi Oil was awarded the "PIANC (The World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure) Supporter of Working with Nature"2 certificate in July 2021. The "Supporter of Working with Nature" certificate is awarded to companies and organizations that contribute to environmentally conscious engineering approaches.
The featured article can be found on pages 92 to 95 of the accompanying “Engineering With Nature: An Atlas, Volume 3.”
Moving forward, the Cosmo Energy Group remains committed to providing a stable energy supply through oil development and production, as well as ongoing efforts to conserve the environment and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
