Cosmo Energy Group company Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd. announced that it began collecting used cooking oil on February 14 in a collaborative initiative with Kitanihon-oil, Ltd., Hajai Ltd., and REVO International Inc., focusing on shopping districts, local restaurants, and food truck operators. The collected used cooking oil will be utilized as feedstock for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)—which significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional aviation fuels—at the plant newly built in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture by SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY, a joint venture in which Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd. holds a stake.
The Cosmo Energy Group, together with JGC HD and REVO International, jointly explored the commercialization of a SAF supply chain encompassing the collection of domestic used cooking oil through the production, transportation, and supply of SAF, culminating in the establishment of SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY in November 2022. With the completion of a new SAF production line (plant) on December 25, 2024, the Group aims to supply approximately 30,000 kiloliters of SAF produced solely from domestically sourced used cooking oil per year. From FY2025 onwards, the Group plans to realize a fully domestic SAF supply chain, covering the procurement of used cooking oil as feedstock, SAF production and quality control, and its eventual supply to airlines.
This initiative will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing the pressing issue of waste reduction in Aizuwakamatsu City by recycling used cooking oil, which was traditionally disposed of as waste. Furthermore, through this effort, the parties aim to make Aizuwakamatsu a sustainable tourism destination, with the entire community working together to promote sustainable tourism based on the Japan Tourism Agency’s Japan Sustainable Tourism Standard for Destinations (JSTS-D), in this region where tourism is thriving.
