Cosmo Energy Switches to Electricity Essentially Generated From Renewable Energy Sources at 603 Directly Operated Service Stations and Related Sites Aims to Achieve Zero Power Use-Related CO2 Emissions and Reduce its Environmental Footprint
June 7, 2022
Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd.
Cosmo Energy Holdings Co., Ltd.
Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "the Company") today announced that it has switched to using electricity generated virtually entirely from renewable energy sources (※1) at a total of 603 service stations ("SS") and vehicle inspection stations directly operated across Japan by its wholly owned subsidiary, Cosmo Oil Sales Corporation.
Although the Company originally announced in May 2021 that it aimed to undertake the switchover within three to five years, the effort was completed well ahead of schedule in approximately one year. With this, all SS directly run by Cosmo Oil Sales are now essentially operated using electricity from renewable energy sources.
The switchover leveraged the collective assets of the Cosmo Energy Group (hereinafter referred to as "the Cosmo Group" or "the Group") while making use of the Cosmo Denki (Electricity) Business Green scheme. This service provides virtually CO2 emissions-free electricity from renewable energy sources endorsed by a non-fossil certificate with tracking (※2) information linked to wind energy generated by the Cosmo Group's Cosmo Eco Power Co., Ltd.
■Cosmo Denki Business Green
Cosmo Denki Business Green is a service that helps businesses achieve virtually zero CO2 emissions by providing them with added environmental value in the form of non-fossil certificates and other designated renewable energy certificates. Customers purchase such certificates with a value equivalent to or greater than their total annual sales volume as part of the electricity sales process, thereby receiving proof that all the electricity they use offers environmental value derived almost entirely from renewable energy sources. Since its launch in 2020, the service has been utilized mainly by corporations and local governments seeking to decarbonize their operations.
With the Cosmo Group aiming to achieve targets set out in its Carbon Net Zero Declaration, the Company is committed to further reducing the impact that energy used in its business operations has on the environment. Moreover, the Company will continue providing its customers with solutions to help realize a carbon-free society, such as electricity retailing and the supply of electricity generated almost entirely from renewable energy sources. At the same time, it will offer electric vehicle-based mobility services as part of its car leasing business.
※1: Electricity regarded as effectively 100% renewable due to being purchased and endorsed with an environmental value certificate (such as a non-fossil certificate) to obtain accreditation as a renewable energy source
※2: Electricity endorsed with a non-fossil certificate with tracking information refers to Cosmo Eco Power's FIT (Feed-in-Tariff)-certified power and other electricity supplied by designated wholesalers
